SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of image quantization. Method of perceptual quantization of images comprises the steps of a receiving access with processor to an input image with an input color depth; applying the process of forming a noise mask to the input image to form an image of a noise mask; forming a histogram of the noise mask based on the input image and the image of the noise mask; applying the function of the ratio of the level of masking noise to the color depth for one or more intervals of the histogram of the noise mask in order to form the minimum color depth for one or more intervals; forming the code word matching function based on the values of the input color depth, the minimum color depth and the target color depth; and applying the codeword matching function to the input image to form an output image with a target color depth that is lower than the input color depth.

EFFECT: providing improved perceptual quantization of images with high dynamic range.
