SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of reception/transmission of hierarchically encoded image data. In the method, the transmission device contains: an image encoding unit configured to perform hierarchical encoding of image data for frames constituting the moving image data, and generating a video stream including encoded image data for frames on the low hierarchy side and on the high hierarchy side; and a transmission unit configured to transmit a multiplexed stream including: a video stream generated by an image coding unit, and a descriptor including: hierarchy range information indicating the maximum and minimum values of the hierarchy corresponding to the encoded image data for each frame included in the video stream, the level specification side of the low hierarchy of the video stream and the value specification of the level of the video stream that includes the side of the low hierarchy of the video stream and the side of the high hierarchy of the video stream; wherein the encoded image data of each frame of each hierarchy includes information for identifying the hierarchy to which the encoded image belongs.
EFFECT: providing the ability to decode image data in accordance with the functionality of the playback on the receiving side.
