SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the processing of materials by cutting and can be used in surface treatment with end mills. In the method, the indexable cutting insert comprises an upper side and a lower side parallel to it. Its central axis extends perpendicularly through the upper and lower extension planes. Further, a side surface connects the upper side and the lower side and comprises a plurality of upper main clearance surfaces and secondary clearance surfaces, at least six identical and alternately usable upper cutting edges. Each cutting edge contains a chip removing main cutting edge portion and at least one secondary cutting edge portion. Said upper side contains a recessed base surface and an upper chip surface between the upper cutting edges and the upper base surface. And the angle of the chip surface is selected in the range of 35°≤ϕ1≤55°, preferably 40°≤ϕ1≤55°, in relation to the upper plane of the length and is located along the portion of the main cutting edge.
EFFECT: increased durability of cutting edges, improved chip removal, smoothness of processing and noise reduction are ensured.
