SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of transmitting images via communication channels with limited bandwidth. Method of transmitting an image over a communication channel contains: on the transmitting side, dividing the original image, presented in BMP format, into important and unimportant parts, compressing the unimportant part by the fractal method, receiving data of a compressed image in FIC format, data transmission via a communication channel, recovery at the receiving side from data of a compressed image in FIC format of an image presented in BMP format, while on the transmitting side, after compressing said unimportant part, a steg embedding of said important uncompressed part of the image into a compressed part is performed, after that, the data of the compressed part of the image with a steg embedding is transmitted via the aforementioned communication channel, and at the receiving side the nested important uncompressed part of the image is extracted from the compressed data, restore the compressed unimportant part of the image to the BMP format, combine the reconstructed unimportant part of the image and the extracted important part of the image, presented in BMP format, and get the full image.

EFFECT: reduction of image transmission time over a communication channel due to a decrease in the amount of transmitted compressed data.
