FIELD: instrument engineering.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a method and device for laser hardening of a surface area of a workpiece, such as the surface of a crankshaft journal. Method includes creating a relative movement between the surface of the workpiece and the laser source to ensure consistent projection of the laser spot on different parts of the specified surface area, and during said relative movement, a repetitive scanning of laser beam (2) to obtain a two-dimensional equivalent effective laser spot (5) on said surface area. In this case, the scanning pattern consists of at least three essentially parallel lines, followed by the laser spot in a certain order. Device includes two laser sources for processing several shaft necks with different widths, two laser sources (1, 1A) can be used to harden the surface area of the wider necks.

EFFECT: technical result consists in creating a practical and efficient device that ensures the completion of the process of hardening the surface area of the workpiece in a relatively short time.
