SUBSTANCE: to improve the quality of the crankshafts, the method of laser hardening the surface portion of the workpiece, such as the crankshaft journal surface, includes the relative movement of the surface of the workpiece and the laser source to ensure the successive projection of the laser spot on different parts of the specified surface area and during said relative movement, a repeated scanning of laser beam (2) to obtain two-dimensional equivalent effective laser spot (5) on said surface region, the energy distribution of the effective laser spot is adapted in such a way that on a more thermally sensitive sub-portion, such as a portion adjacent to the oil channel opening, it is different than on the less thermally sensitive sub-section, in order to prevent overheating of this more thermally sensitive sub-region.
