SUBSTANCE: invention relates to analytical chemistry and specifically to a method of determining content of iodate ions and can be used for accurate quantitative and semi-quantitative rapid, visual-test determination of iodate in edible salt. Method of determining content of iodate in a food salt using an optical membrane, comprising preparing a solution of edible salt, interaction of the analyzed solution with the optical membrane, its subsequent separation from the solution, measurement of the analytical signal and evaluation of the content of iodate, is characterized by that the optical membrane used is a polymethacrylate matrix, the analytical signal used is absorption of the optical membrane at 365 nm, thermal lens signal or visual assessment of color intensity of optical membrane, evaluation of content of iodate ions is carried out according to calibration curve or visually-test method.

EFFECT: disclosed is a method of determining iodate using a polymethacrylate matrix.
