SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in lighting devices and information display devices. Lighting element 100 comprises radiation source 10 and luminescent material 20, which converts at least part of radiation 11 from source 10 into radiation 51. Radiation source 10 comprises a light emitting diode. Luminescent material 20 contains a luminescent substance 40 having the formula Ml-x-y-zZzAaBbCcDdEeN6-nOn:ESx,REy (I), where is M are selected from a group consisting of Ca, Sr and Ba; Z are selected from a group consisting of Na, K and Rb; A are selected from a group consisting of Li and Cu; B are selected from a group consisting of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cd; C are selected from a group consisting of B, Al and Ga; D are selected from a group consisting of tetravalent Si, Ge, Ti and Hf; E are selected from a group consisting of pentavalent P, V, Nb and Ta; ES are selected from a group consisting of divalent Eu, Sm and Yb; RE are selected from a group consisting of trivalent Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm; 0≤x≤0.2; 0≤y≤0.2; 0<x+y≤0.4; 0≤z<1; x+y+z<1; 0≤n≤0.75; 0≤a≤2; 0≤b≤2; 0≤c≤4; 0≤d≤4; e=0; a+b=2; c+d+e=4; a+2b+3c+4d+5e+y-z=16-n. Phosphor particles may have a coating from a group consisting of AlPO4, Al2O3 and SiO2. Luminescent material 20 may additionally include phosphors selected from Ba0.95Sr0.05Mg2Ga2N4:Eu, BaMg2Ga2N4:Eu, SrMg3SiN4:Eu, SrMg2Al2N4:Eu, SrMg2Ga2N4:Eu, BaMg3SiN4:Eu, CaLiAl3N4:Eu, SrLiAl3N4:Eu, CaLi0.5MgAl2.5N4:Eu and SrLi0.5MgAl2.5N4:Eu.
