SUBSTANCE: use of copolymers, having on average: at least four acid groups per polymer chain, wherein the acid groups are carboxyl groups, the ratio of carbon atoms to the acid group ranges from 7 to 35 and the acid number ranges from 80 to 320 mg KOH/g, determined by potentiographic titration with 0.5 molar aqueous hydrochloric acid after three-hour heating in 0.5 molar ethanolic potassium hydroxide solution; as a fuel additive for reducing fuel consumption by direct injection diesel engines and to minimise power loss in direct injection diesel engines, as an additive to diesel fuels for reducing and / or preventing deposits in feed systems and / or as a petrol additive for reducing deposits in the inlet system of a direct injection and spark ignition (DISI) petrol engine and port fuel injector (PFI) petrol engine, copolymers have solubility in toluene at 20 °C of at least 5 g/100 ml.

EFFECT: technical result consists in the use of said copolymers as fuel additives to reduce fuel consumption, to minimise power loss and to reduce and / or prevent deposits.
