FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to semitransparent mother-of-pearl pigments, a method for production and use thereof. Said mother-of-pearl pigments are monolithically formed plates of the metal oxide substrate, having average thickness of 1–40 nm and a shape factor as a ratio of the average size to the average thickness of at least 80. Said plates of the substrate are completely coated with at least one substantially transparent coating A and contain at least one interference layer of coating B. At that, A consists of at least one low-refracting metal oxide and/or metal oxide hydrate with a refraction index of less than 1.8; B consists of at least one high-refractive metal oxide with refraction index equal to at least 1.8.
EFFECT: invention provides a flexible and cost-effective method of producing environmentally safe mother-of-pearl pigments with high coating power, stability and high color saturation.
