FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention can be used in inorganic chemistry. Method of producing titanium carbide-based powder involves generation of a DC arc discharge in a gaseous medium between cylindrical graphite anodes and a cathode. Powder mixture of carbon and titanium, taken in atomic ratio of Ti:C equal to 1:(1–3), is placed in cavity of cathode made in form of vertically arranged cup. Arc discharge is ignited in air by contact of anode made in form of solid rod, with powder mixture located at cathode bottom at current intensity from 80 A to 200 A. Then anode is removed vertically upwards, forming discharge gap from 0.1 to 0.8 mm and maintaining arc discharge for 2–20 s.
EFFECT: invention enables to obtain titanium carbide-based powder in a DC arc discharge plasma initiated in an air atmosphere without creating a low-density protective atmosphere.
