FIELD: geoelectric prospecting.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to geoelectric prospecting and can be used for studying structure of earth's crust. Multidirectional electric and magnetic components of the magnetotelluric field are measured at the surface of the Earth, from which partial impedances of waves of magnetic and electric type are determined, and distribution of conductivity of the horizontally layered section of the earth's crust in the upper mantle is determined. Measuring device for extraction of vertical electrical component in natural magnetotelluric field is performed by circular electric dipole scheme, for this purpose, horizontal radial earthed lines converging to the centre through equal angular intervals are placed with a radius corresponding to depth of investigation, and grounded at external ends and common central electrode. Measuring device can be located on the sea surface by means of floating buoys or on the drifting ice, and electrodes are grounded through holes in ice.
EFFECT: high efficiency of magnetotelluric sounding when observing weak lateral inhomogeneities.
