FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to aluminosilicate glass compositions containing an alkali-earth metal, with improved chemical and mechanical resistance, which are used, in particular, for making pharmaceutical packages. Glass composition includes from approximately 67 mol. % to approximately 75 mol. % SiO2, from about 6 mol. % to about 12.5 mol. % Al2O3, from about 5 mol. % to about 12 mol. % of an alkali metal oxide and from about 9 mol. % to about 15 mol. % alkali-earth metal oxide. Alkali metal oxide contains at least Na2O and K2O.
EFFECT: glass composition is free of boron and boron compounds and is capable of ionic exchange, thereby promoting chemical glass hardening to improve mechanical resistance.
