FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: glass composition comprises from 67 mol % to 75 mol % SiO2, from 6 mol % to 10 mol % Al2O3, from 5 mol % to 12 mol % of an alkali metal oxide and from 9 mol % to 15 mol % of an alkaline earth metal oxide. The alkali metal oxide contains at least Na2O and K2O, the content of K2O is less than or equal to 0.5 mol %. The alkaline earth metal oxide contains CaO, MgO, and optionally BaO and SrO. The glass composition is free from boron and boron compounds and is capable of ion exchange, thereby promoting chemical hardening of the glass to improve mechanical resistance. The coefficient of thermal expansion of glass is less than 60⋅10-7 K-1.
