SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for polymerization or copolymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers. Polymerization is carried out in a reactor at pressure of 110–500 MPa. Production line comprises continuous polymerization reactor. Method involves monitoring the environment of a production line relative to the occurrence of leakage of monomers or a reaction mixture using a layout arrangement of infrared sensors of point type, consisting of at least three groups of infrared sensors of point type, which are able to detect hydrocarbons, and groups of infrared sensors of point type, functioning in accordance with the selective logic system and automatically starting the emergency pressure release program, when the group of infrared sensors of the point type from the arrangement scheme of infrared sensors of point type detects presence of hydrocarbons.

EFFECT: method makes it possible to quickly relieve pressure after leak detection in a polymerization unit under high pressure.
