FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the polymerization or copolymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of free radical initiators. Polymerization is carried out in a continuous polymerization reactor at a temperature of 100–350 °C and a pressure of 110–500 MPa. Control of the process is carried out by a pressure control valve at the outlet of the polymerization reactor. Method includes continuously monitoring the pressure within the polymerization reactor, transmitting a pressure indicator signal to the controller for controlling the pressure control valve. Controller changes the opening value of the pressure control valve to control the pressure within the polymerization reactor. Also, the controller starts the emergency stop program when the pressure control valve closes above a predetermined critical value, and the pressure inside the polymerization reactor falls below a predetermined threshold pressure.

EFFECT: reliable and easy-to-implement polymerization process that allows rapid detection of leaks in a high-pressure polymerization plant, which helps to prevent the possible formation of explosive gaseous mixtures of hydrocarbon/oxygen.
