SUBSTANCE: disclosed is a method of producing 3-methylglutaraldehyde, involving a step for hydrolysis of a compound represented by the following general formula (1):

where R1 and R2 are joined together, being an alkylene group containing 2–6 carbon atoms, and a step where a compound represented by the following general formula (2) is reacted:

where R3 and R4 are joined together, being an alkylene group containing 2–6 carbon atoms, for hydroformylation, to obtain a compound represented by the following general formula (1). Also disclosed is a compound of general formula (3):

In which R5 represents a linear alkylene group containing 2 or 4–6 carbon atoms.
EFFECT: technical result is providing a method of producing MGL (3-methyl-1,5-petandial) with good output in mild conditions and a new acetal compound.
