A method of improving backward compatible decoding, the method comprising: accessing, by a processor, an image database; calculating a first tone value in a first color space of images in a database; calculating a second tone value in a second color space of images in a database; calculating an optimum tone turning angle by finding a tone rotation angle which minimizes the cost function of the tone, wherein the value function of the tone is based on the difference between the values of the first tone and the values of the turned second tone; and generating, based on the optimum rotation angle of the tone of the color turning matrix, to rotate the color of the input image before encoding.

EFFECT: improved backward compatible decoding.
