SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to an apparatus and a method for assessing compliance with welfare requirements of an animal in relation to an animal for slaughter. Device comprises an image capturing unit (2) with an image capturing region (3), in which a surface area of animal (1) for slaughter can be optically grasped and in which image elements can be fixed, and wherein image capturing unit (2) can provide in image suitable for transmission data on image elements, and comprises evaluation unit (4), which is connected to image capturing unit (2) and which is configured to record data on image elements, wherein in estimation unit (4), the normative model of animal (1) for slaughter is stored, wherein the regulatory model is a structure of animal-related features corresponding to welfare requirements of the animal. Characteristics related to an animal are skin color, skin surface texture, external outlines or physical characteristics. Evaluation unit (4) is configured to match data on image elements with a normative model, to recognize deviation of data on image elements from a regulatory model and providing said deviation in a suitable form for transmission in form of abnormality of animal (1) for slaughter from normal. Image capturing unit (2) comprises a number of image capturing chambers (2.1–2.4), and wherein each image capturing camera (2.1–2.4) has an image capturing subregion (3.1–3.4). Above image capturing subareas overlap each other so as to provide coverage of the entire surface of animal (1) for slaughter.

EFFECT: invention also discloses a method of assessing compliance with welfare requirements of an animal in relation to an animal for slaughter, which can be carried out using such a device.
