SUBSTANCE: invention relates to medicine, namely to surgery. Exudate of abdominal cavity is daily taken from abdominal cavity drainages and pH of this exudate is measured. If the pH value of the abdominal exudate increases by more than 0.2, the favorable course of peritonitis is diagnosed. If the exudate pH value is reduced by more than 0.2, the unfavorable course of peritonitis is diagnosed and the indications for relaparotomy are stated. If the exudate pH value changes by 0.2 and less to either side of the primary value, the indeterminate course of peritonitis is diagnosed and the exudate pH value is repeatedly determined on the following day.

EFFECT: method enables individual, objective and accurate early detection of the course of postoperative peritonitis that reduces number of unreasonable repeated operations.
