SUBSTANCE: invention relates to system diagnostics of engine coolant. Engine coolant system malfunction is indicated based on engine coolant temperature calculation model, while in another example engine system coolant malfunction is indicated based on time based monitor, wherein the calculation model is included at ambient temperature values exceeding a predetermined threshold value, and wherein the time-based monitor is switched on at ambient temperature values below a predetermined threshold value. Therefore, the engine coolant system exact diagnostics can be performed at different ambient temperature values when the engine coolant temperature calculation model may not operate correctly.
EFFECT: invention provides improved functioning of the engine cooling system due to continuous monitoring of the vehicle thermostat.
