FIELD: biotechnology.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to biotechnology, namely to identification of a heterogeneous population of kidney cells suitable for providing a regenerative stimulus for the kidney, and treatment of human renal disease. Method comprises recovering cells from a mammalian kidney sample and exposing the sample of said recovered cells with labeled detection components, wherein each labeled detection component is targeted to a unique biomarker and marked with a unique label, wherein said detectable biomarkers are GGT-1, cytokeratin, VEGF and KIM-1. It is then determined whether GGT-1 expresses more than 4.5 % of said recovered cells in said heterogeneous population of kidney cells; whether cytokeratin expresses more than 80 % of said recovered cells in said heterogeneous population of kidney cells; and whether said isolated cells include said cells in said heterogeneous population of renal cell cells which express VEGF and KIM-1, thereby identifying said heterogeneous population of kidney cells. That is followed by administering to a human an effective amount of cells from said identified heterogeneous population of kidney cells recovered from a non-embryonic autologous kidney sample of said human.
