SUBSTANCE: invention relates to biotechnology and can be used to assess toxicity of various materials. Method for determining toxicity of materials involves growing Chlorella vulgaris in an aqueous solution containing NH4NO3, KH2PO4, NaH2PO4, (NH4)2SO4, (NH4)2CO3, Mg(NO3)2, FeCl3 and CaCl2 in a given number of components and at given parameters both in the presence of different amounts of tested materials, and in their absence. At the beginning and at the end of incubation samples are used to measure intensity of light elastically scattered at wave length 540±10 nm (Iod), optical density at wavelength of 435±10 nm (Avd) and photofluorescence intensity at excitation and emission wavelengths 367±10 nm and 685±10 nm (Iff). Total degree of activation or inhibition (+/-) of the test microorganisms activity by the tested materials is determined using formula: εS=(εIodAvdIff)/3, where εIod, εAvd and εIff are determined by formulas εY=100×(ΔYt-ΔYc)/ΔYc, where ΔY=Ye-Yb – difference of values Iod, Avd or Iff, recorded in beginning (Yb) and at end (Ye) incubation of test samples in presence of tested materials (ΔYt) and in their absence (ΔYc).

EFFECT: invention increases objectivity of determining toxicity of materials.
