FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention discloses an alginate oligomer of 2–75 monomer residues wherein said monomer residues do not carry a sulphate group for use as blood anticoagulant in clinical and non-clinical applications, including in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro conditions. In addition, the invention provides use of such an alginate oligomer in producing a product or device having a reduced ability to cause blood coagulation, wherein said alginate oligomer is provided in or on the surface of said product or device, as well as a method for preventing or inhibiting blood coagulation in vitro or ex vivo, involving bringing into contact a composition containing blood plasma or a material selected from transplanted tissue, or a product or device, or parts thereof, which when in use come into contact with blood or a product obtained from blood with which said composition contacts or can be contacted, with an alginate oligomer of 2–50 monomer residues, wherein said monomer residues are residues of guluronate and/or mannuronate and where said monomer residues do not carry a sulphate group.
EFFECT: disclosed is the use of alginate oligomers as blood anticoagulants.
