FIELD: forestry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to forest and horticultural economy and can be used for protection of plants against pests. Method of determining occupancy of forest and garden plantations of a brown-tail moth one consists in determining the number of pests on the investigated plantation area. In planting on a fixed number of accounting trees at a specified age section, the actual number of the brown-tail moth nests is determined using a statistically valid table of the required sample size at a given level of allowable error. Further, depending on the size of the nests, the number of caterpillar pests found therein is determined based on the developed table. Method of accounting uses mortality rate of caterpillar lines during their overwintering, including death from established mortality factors, as well as determining actual number of caterpillar tracks capable of damaging plantations. To calculate the threat of the forthcoming damage, a regression equation is used which characterizes the relation between the number of wintering caterpillars and degree of leaf eating in percentage.

EFFECT: method will make it possible to increase accuracy when determining plantations pest colonization and to reduce labor intensity.
