FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of long-chain internal ketones. Invention relates to a method of decarboxylating ketonisation of fatty acids, derivatives of fatty acids or mixtures thereof in liquid phase with elementary metals or metal compounds as a catalyst, wherein elementary metals and metal compounds are selected from a group consisting of magnesium, iron and oxides thereof. At the first stage elementary metal or metal compound and fatty acid, fatty acid derivative or their mixture containing at least 10 mol. % of fatty acids containing 12 carbon atoms or less, or fatty acid derivatives containing 12 carbon atoms or less, with respect to the total amount of fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives, are mixed in a molar ratio of 1:0.8 to 1:3.5 (molar ratio metal : equivalent carboxyl group) and subjected to reaction for time P1 from 5 minutes to 24 hours at temperature T1 from 100 °C to 270 °C in essence in the absence of added solvents. Then temperature is increased to temperature T2, which is higher than 270 °C and up to 400 °C, and additional fatty acids, derivatives of fatty acids or their mixture containing at least 10 mol. % of fatty acids containing 12 carbon atoms or less, or derivatives of such fatty acids with respect to the total amount of fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives are added for a period of time P2 from 5 minutes to 24 hours substantially without addition of solvents, unless the ratio of fatty acid, fatty acid derivatives or mixtures thereof to metal does not reach interval from 6:1 to 99:1.

EFFECT: technical result is obtaining ketones from fatty acids or derivatives thereof using a practical and simple method with high output of ketones.
