FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing tert-butyl alcohol, carried out in continuous flow mode at pressure of 40 to 100 atm. and involving sequential liquid-phase oxidation of isobutane or isobutane fraction with oxygen at temperature 130–150 °C to form a reaction mixture containing predominantly tert-butyl alcohol and tert-butyl hydroperoxide, contacting the formed reaction mixture with a heterogeneous catalyst at temperature of 80 to 150 °C, leading to conversion of tert-butyl hydroperoxide preferentially to tert-butyl alcohol and additional oxidation of isobutane, and condensation of a mixture of liquid oxidation products from the final reaction mixture at atmospheric pressure, followed by separation of tert-butyl alcohol from a mixture of liquid oxidation products by azeotropic rectification using water and ethyl acetate as separating agents.
EFFECT: disclosed method increases selectivity of formation of high-purity tert-butyl alcohol.
