SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the use of iodides for treating and preventing diseases and injuries. Disclosed is a method of treating or inhibiting reperfusion injury caused by restoration of blood flow to ischemic tissue or organ, in a subject, comprising administering to said subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising sodium iodide and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, diluent or excipient, wherein reperfusion injury is caused by a heart attack, percutaneous coronary angioplasty or thrombolysis, and wherein said composition is administered to said subject in an amount, sufficient to increase blood concentration of iodide by at least 500 %. Also disclosed is a method of treating myocardial infarction in a subject.
EFFECT: group of inventions provides an effective therapy for reducing or preventing ischemic and reperfusion injury.
