FIELD: medicine, pharmaceuticals and therapy.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions can be used in the treatment of respiratory diseases. A composition suitable for administration by inhalation comprises (a) glutathione or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; (b) ascorbic acid; and (c) a bicarbonate salt. The molar ratio (a):(b):(c) is approximately 0.1–0.5:0.5–1:1. Also a method of inhibiting or reducing the growth of clinical isolate bacteria or biofilm of clinical isolate bacteria; a method of treating or alleviating symptoms in a subject suffering from or at risk of infection with the bacteria of the clinical isolate; a method of enhancing mucociliary clearance in a subject suffering from or at risk of impaired mucociliary clearance; a method of reducing airway inflammation in a subject suffering from or at risk of airway inflammation; a method for reducing mucus viscosity in a subject suffering from or at risk of impaired mucociliary clearance; a method for increasing the expression of a cystic fibrosis transmembrane receptor (CFTR) in a subject suffering from reduced expression of CFTR, the said methods comprising administering the said composition to the subject are provided.
EFFECT: increasing the effectiveness of the treatment of respiratory diseases ensured due to the synergistic effect between glutathione, ascorbic acid and bicarbonate.
