Method comprises contacting a gaseous and/or aerosol medium, containing nitrogen oxides with surface modified calcium carbonate having specific BET surface area of 10–200 m²/g. Surface-modified calcium carbonate is a reaction product of natural ground calcium carbonate or precipitated calcium carbonate with carbon dioxide and one or more donors of H₃O⁺ ions, wherein carbon dioxide is formed in situ by treatment with donors of H₃O⁺ ions and/or is supplied from an external source.
