FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to compositions based on an organic solvent used as a binder in compositions of intumescent coatings. Disclosed is a binder based on an organic solvent for use in compositions of an intumescent coating containing a copolymer obtained by reacting the composition, containing a monomer mixture and an organic solvent, wherein said monomer mixture contains 70–97 weight percent ethylenically unsaturated monomer, containing two or more of lower (C1-C4)alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid, vinyl acetate or styrene; and 3–30 weight percent of monomer of vinyl ester, wherein composition essentially does not contain methanol. Invention also discloses a swelling coating composition and a substrate which is at least partially coated with a swelling coating composition.

EFFECT: technical result is use of disclosed binder in composition of intumescent coating enables to obtain coating, operating in wide range of types of environment.
