FIELD: medicine; pulmonology.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in intensive therapy for rapid assessment of acute respiratory failure in primary examination of patients with spontaneous breathing. In patients with background of spontaneous breathing at FiO2—0.21, peripheral saturation of oxygen is measured by pulse oximetry and breath frequency is measured. A respiratory-saturation index (RSI) is calculated by original calculation formula. If RSI value ≥ 290 absence of acute respiratory failure is stated. If RSI < 290, acute respiratory failure is stated.

EFFECT: method enables diagnosing acute respiratory failure in primary examination of patients with spontaneous breathing.
