FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to determine the reflector cross-section perpendicular to the welded joint as per TOFD-echo signals. Essence of the invention consists in the fact that on both sides of the welded connection two piezoelectric transducers are installed and moved along the welded joint, recording the longitudinal wave echo signals measured in the shadow mode, the received echo signals are analysed and the welded joint quality is determined, by analysing the type of detected reflector and its height, additionally recording each piezoelectric transducer in a combined mode echo signals of longitudinal and transverse waves reflected from the bottom of the sample, on each of three echoes, measured in combined and shadow modes, obtaining set of partial images of reflector, for this purpose, a pulse propagation path from the emitter to each point of the image recovery area is calculated and further to a receiver for a given combination of sound velocities in each path section and placing the echo signal value at a time point, equal to the pulse propagation time along the calculated trajectory, with the help of the median operation, the partial images are combined into one image, from which the reflector location in the section perpendicular to the welded joint is determined.

EFFECT: enabling, using equipment designed for ultrasonic inspection by TOFD-technology, determining coordinates of reflectors in cross section of welded joint at high speed of ultrasonic inspection specific for TOFD-technology, without using an additional expensive scanning device for transverse scanning.
