FIELD: hygiene; pharmaceutics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for increasing the number of beneficial bacteria of the oral cavity and reducing the amount of harmful oral bacteria. Method comprises administering to oral cavity an oral care composition containing an effective amount of saccharide prebiotic for selective growth stimulation, metabolic activity or colonization of bacteria, having a favorable effect on the health of the oral cavity, selected from a group consisting of Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus sanguinis, Actinomyces viscosus, Veillonella parvula, Streptococcus gordonii, Actinomyces naeslundii, preferable to growth, metabolic activity or colonization of pathogenic bacteria of oral cavity, where the saccharide prebiotic is selected from D-turanose, D-melicitose, myoinositol and mixtures thereof, taken in amount of 0.1–5 wt % of the total weight of the composition.
EFFECT: use of the method can represent an effective preventive approach for providing a healthy oral cavity.
