SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the field of use of oral care compositions to prevent diseases in the oral cavity. Disclosed is use of oral care compositions containing carboxylic acid, where said acid is monomethyl succinate, for the prevention of one or more periodontal diseases selected from the group consisting of gingivitis, periodontitis, peri-implantitis, peri-implant mucositis, necrotising gingivitis, necrotising periodontitis and caries. Also disclosed is a method of preventing one or more periodontal diseases selected from the group consisting of gingivitis, periodontitis, peri-implantitis, peri-implant mucositis, necrotising gingivitis, necrotising periodontitis and caries in a subject, wherein the method includes bringing the oral cavity of the subject into contact with an oral care composition comprising an effective amount of a carboxylic acid, wherein the carboxylic acid is monomethyl succinate.

EFFECT: monomethyl succinate has been shown to have a prebiotic effect, which allows the use of compositions containing monomethyl succinate to maintain and/or restore a healthy oral microbiota and prevent the above diseases.
