FIELD: ophthalmology.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to ophthalmology, namely to an ophthalmic composition and a method for providing or facilitating the penetration or absorption of a drug through the corneal membrane. An ophthalmic composition for topical use contains a poorly water-soluble drug and a carrier that contains oil, one or more surfactants and one or more cosolvents; moreover, the specified composition is capable of self-emulsification when mixed with an aqueous solution when instilled into an eye. The composition contains from 5% to 60% wt. /wt. of oil. The composition contains less than 1% wt. of water. Oil is selected from the group consisting of one long chain triglyceride, one medium chain triglyceride, a medium chain monoglyceride and a medium chain diglyceride, a surfactant selected from the group consisting of purified polyoxyl-35-castor oil, polyoxyl-40-hydrogenated castor oil and polysorbate 80, and the co-solvents are selected from the group consisting of polyethylene glycol 300, polyethylene glycol 400, and propylene glycol.

EFFECT: group of inventions helps to obtain a thermodynamically stable microemulsion that does not degrade over time. The group of inventions also improves the residence time in an eye.
