SUBSTANCE: invention relates to smoking accessories and in particular to a system for generating an aerosol. Disclosed is an aerosol generating system including a cartridge and an aerosol generating device. The cartridge consists of the aerosol forming substrate of the cartridge. The cartridge is annular in shape. The aerosol generating device consists of a liquid storage section containing a liquid substrate that forms an aerosol. The aerosol generating device also includes the first electrical heater configured to heat the aerosol forming liquid substrate from the liquid storage section. The aerosol generating device also has a power supply section containing a power supply unit and a controller. The power supply section has the first end and the second end, and the liquid storage section has the first end and the second end. The first end of the liquid storage section can be detached and attached to the second end of the power supply section. One of the first end of the liquid storage section and the second end of the power supply section forms a flange when the liquid storage section is attached to the power supply section. The aerosol generating device is adapted to position the cartridge on the aerosol generating device in such a way so that the cartridge is positioned against the flange and at least partially covers the air inlet of the device.
