SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an aqueous composition for reducing the removal of material by corrosion when etching metal surfaces in the form of uncoated and/or galvanized steel, as well as to a method for etching the corresponding metal surface with reduced removal of material by corrosion. The aqueous composition includes a mixture of a compound of Formula I wherein R1 and R2 both mean H, and the compounds of Formula I, in which R1 and R2 each, independently of each other, means НО-(СН2)w-group with w ≥ 2, wherein х and у each, independently of each other, means from 1 to 4 in each of the two compounds of Formula I.

EFFECT: invention makes it possible to increase the duration of operation of the corresponding etching bath by providing a reduction in the removal of material by corrosion during etching of the specified metal surfaces.
