SUBSTANCE: invention relates to cruise control. The vehicle cruise control system contains a controller for determining the speed of the vehicle and issuing a torque command in response to the output from a predictive cruise control program based on an adaptive nonlinear model. The definition of the torque command is based on the shape of the vehicle's fuel consumption pattern. Operation of the driving torque source is secured to output the torque of the powertrain. Powertrain torque is limited below the powertrain torque threshold. Transmission downshifts in response to powertrain torque equal to or greater than the powertrain torque threshold at a specified defined vehicle speed.
EFFECT: reduced fuel consumption.
