The industrial machine contains a drive, a gear reducer, a cutting drum, a cutting tip connected to the cutting drum, and a sensor for determining the characteristics of the industrial machine. This characteristic represents the energy of stress waves. The controller accepts the mentioned characteristic and determines the cutting efficiency. The first and second characteristics of the gear reducer and the cutting drum are determined, with the said characteristic being the energy of the stress waves. The characteristics are compared with each other and, based on the comparison, it is determined whether the cutting tip is worn.
