SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of electrocommunication and information technology. The technical result is achieved by the fact that the next information sequence with a length of k>2 bits is received by the transmitting side, the values of the conditional probability of the appearance of the next bit thereof from the previous bits are calculated, 2≤m<<k of the largest values of the conditional probability of the appearance of the next bit of the next information sequence are selected, the current values of the conditional probability of encoding the null character and the single character are set corresponding with the selected values of the probability, the current arithmetic encoding interval is divided into the current sub-interval of encoding the null character and the current sub-interval of encoding the single character, depending on the current values of the conditional probability of encoding the null character and the single character, arithmetic encoding of the next bit is executed, depending on the previous bits with the current values of the conditional probability, the current values of the conditional probability of encoding the null character and the single character are recalculated and subsequent actions are performed until the next bits of the next information sequence are exhausted, and similar actions of arithmetic decoding are performed on the receiving side, depending on the previous decoded bits with the current values of the conditional probability.
EFFECT: reduced rate of transmission over the transmission channel of the en coded sequence.
