The improved functional element with electrically adjustable optical property includes a set of the following sequence of layers: a first substrate film, a first surface electrode, an active layer, a second surface electrode, and a second substrate film. The second substrate film is folded around the edge of the first substrate film at least one side edge and seals the exit surface of the active layer on the side edge.
