FIELD: chemical industry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the technology of inorganic materials and concerns the development of a method for producing gadolinium (III) chloride with a reduced content of uranium and thorium. The method for producing gadolinium (III) chloride is purification by annealing in a dynamic vacuum. Moreover, at the first stage, gadolinium chloride is calcined in an atmosphere of hydrogen chloride at atmospheric or reduced pressure at a temperature of 500-600°C. At the second stage, gadolinium chloride is annealed in vacuum at a temperature of 600-700°C and residual pressure of no higher than 10-4 Torr.
EFFECT: increasing the depth of purification of gadolinium chloride for uranium and thorium to less than 10-8 wt.% with the content of the main substance at least 99.999 wt.%, while simplifying the known technologies and obtaining a minimum amount of waste.
