SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a functional assembly for an industrial robot and to an industrial robot. The functional assembly comprises a support frame (3) containing a flange (305) for attachment to the wrist (105) of the robot, a working unit (4), e.g., a gripping apparatus or a working tool supported by the support frame (3), and a protective casing (5) for the working unit (4), forming a restriction volume. The functional assembly is configured to assume a first working configuration wherein the protective casing (5) surrounds and covers the working unit (4), and a second working configuration wherein the working unit (4) is located at least partially outside of the restriction volume of the protective casing (5). The protective casing (5) has a fixed part (5A) and a part (5B) movable along the main direction (A) relative to the fixed part (5A). The movable part (5B) is made movable between the lowered position wherein said part surrounds and completely covers the working unit (4), and the raised position wherein the working unit (4) is not covered. The fixed part (5A) is rigidly connected with the support frame (3) supporting the working unit. The movable part (5B) is located outside of the fixed part and is movably installed on the support frame (3). The fixed part (5A) and the movable part (5B) have a collaborative external structure equipped with proximity sensors and/or contact sensors configured to detect proximity and/or contact with a foreign body.
