The aerosol-generating system comprises a liquid storage part (201) for retaining an aerosol-forming liquid substrate, a first electrode pair (320), a second electrode pair (330), and a control system. The liquid storage part (201) comprises first part (220) in fluid communication with a second part (230). The first electrode pair (320) is adjacent to the first part (220) of the liquid storage part (201) or is located in said part. The second electrode pair (330) is adjacent to the second part (230) of the liquid storage part (201) or is in said part. The control system is configured to: measure the electrical value between the first electrode pair (320); measure the electrical value between the second electrode pair (330) and determine the orientation of the liquid storage part (201), based on the measurements of the electrical value between the first electrode pair (320) and measurements of the electrical value between the second electrode pair (330).
