SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an aerosol generating system. The aerosol generating system contains a liquid storage part designed to hold liquid aerosol forming substrate, a pair of electrodes located adjacent to or in the liquid storage part, a sensor made with the possibility of recognizing the orientation of the liquid storage part, an aerosol generating device located with the possibility of obtaining liquid aerosol forming substrate from the liquid storage part. The system includes one or more power sources located with the possibility of supplying power to the aerosol generating device, and a control system made with the possibility of measuring an electrical value between the pair of electrodes, obtaining orientation information from the sensor, determining the amount of liquid aerosol forming substrate held in the liquid storage part, based on information about the electrical value measured between the pair of electrodes and orientation information received from the sensor, and controlling the power supply from one or more power sources to the aerosol generating device, based on the determined orientation of the liquid storage part. The liquid storage part has a length, and the pair of electrodes passes essentially along the length of the liquid storage part.

EFFECT: reduction in power supplied to an aerosol generating device is provided, when the system is in an orientation, at which the liquid supply to the aerosol generating device is reduced or prevented, as well as decrease in the probability of drying of the aerosol generating device.
