SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for signalling reference images. Buffer description information specifying at least one reference image is retrieved from said encoded representation of said image. Based on said buffer description information, at least one image identifier identifying the corresponding reference image is determined from said at least one reference image as a decoding link for said image. The buffer of decoded images is updated based on said image identifier, wherefor all reference images present in said buffer of decoded images and not associated with any one of said at least one image identifier are marked as unused for the link.
EFFECT: increase in the efficiency of signalling of reference images.
