SUBSTANCE: invention relates to decoding an image block from a special reconstructed reference image. Disclosed is a method for decoding an image unit, which comprises: decoding the S_diff stream into decoded data and into one information for identifying the reconstructed reference image in the decoder image buffer. By way of example, the S_diff stream encodes the pixel-by-pixel difference between another reconstructed reference image R1, different from R2, and the reconstructed reference image R2. R1 is, for example, a reconstructed reference image from which the current image block Bc is encoded. Method also includes reconstruction of a specific reference image from at least the identified reconstructed reference image and from the decoded data; reconstruction of the image block from at least a special reference image, wherein the special reference image is not displayed.
