FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of metallurgy; it can be used in the production of steel in electric arc steelmaking furnaces using scrap metal. Scrap metal is loaded onto a furnace hearth, melted, the melt is carbonized, oxidation and reduction periods are carried out. Carbonization of the melt is carried out by blowing into the melt in a nitrogen jet at a pressure of at least 9.0 atm a powdered mixture of magnesite fraction of 0.1-3.0 mm and carbon-containing material fraction of 0.1-3.0 mm in the ratio, respectively (38-43):(57-62) with a mixture consumption of 3.8-16.2 kg/t of the weight of the melt.

EFFECT: invention makes it possible to reduce the duration of melting by 0.3-0.8 min and electricity consumption by 10-15 kW·h/t, reduce the consumption of electrodes by 0.02-0.11 kg/t, and also increase the durability of the furnace lining up to 1360 melts.
