FIELD: video technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for encoding video. The input image is received in the first representation of the code words. A direct conversion function that maps the pixels of the input image into a second representation of the code words is generated. At the same time, generating the direct conversion function includes: splitting the input image into many pixel regions; distribution of each of the pixel regions into one of the set of codeword intervals according to the first brightness characteristic of each pixel region; calculation of the interval indicator for each of the set of codeword intervals according to the second brightness characteristic of each of the pixel regions distributed in each of the set of codeword intervals; distribution of a certain number of code words in the second representation of code words in each of the set of code word intervals according to the interval indicator of each of the set of code word intervals and the criterion for optimizing the dependence of distortion on the transmission rate.
EFFECT: increase in the efficiency of video encoding.
